Short answer
When do you need A2?
You need A2 to fly a class C2 drone (under 4 kg) close to people. With A2 you may fly:
- at least 30 metres horizontally from uninvolved people, or
- at least 5 metres with the drone’s low-speed mode switched on.
Without A2, a C2 drone is flown under A3 rules: far from people and at least 150 metres from residential, commercial, industrial and recreational areas. Flying over assemblies of people is never allowed in the open category.
Step by step
- Get the A1/A3 licence first. A2 builds on the same test.
- Study Transportstyrelsen’s A2 training material.
- Book the test at an authorised drone school (ADS). Transportstyrelsen publishes a list of schools.
- Pass the extra test: 30 multiple-choice questions, at least 75 % correct.
- Complete the practical self-training and declare it on Drönarsidan under “Intyga flygövningar”. The exercises differ for multirotor and fixed-wing drones.
Like the A1/A3 test, the A2 test is set by Transportstyrelsen, which says its test is in Swedish.
What the test covers
The A2 test goes deeper into what matters when flying near people: meteorology, drone performance, reducing the risk to people on the ground, and distance rules such as the 1:1 rule, where your horizontal distance must be at least equal to your height.
What does A2 cost?
Transportstyrelsen’s fee for A2 is SEK 850, or SEK 600 if you have already paid for A1/A3. A retake costs SEK 600. See all fees.
Where is it valid?
The licence is valid for 5 years across the EU/EEA. Other countries may add local rules on top.
