Drones under 250 g in Sweden

What applies to light drones like the DJI Mini series: licence, operator ID and insurance.

Last updated 29 October 2026

Short answer

You do not need a drone licence for a drone under 250 grams. If it has a camera or another sensor, though, you must register as an operator and mark the drone with your operator ID.

Do I need to register?

  • With a camera or sensor: yes, you need an operator ID.
  • Without a camera or sensor: no, as long as the drone weighs less than 250 grams.
  • Toys and drones flown only indoors: no.

If you live in Sweden, registration costs SEK 190, then SEK 250 a year. If you live in another EU/EEA country, register there instead. How registration works.

Do I need a licence?

No. A licence is required from 250 grams. Transportstyrelsen still recommends the A1/A3 licence even for the lightest drones, and you will need it anyway if you move up to a heavier drone.

Watch the weight

The limit applies to the drone’s total take-off mass, including everything attached to it. A bigger battery, a propeller guard or an accessory can push it over 250 grams, and then you need a licence. Since 1 January 2026, flying a drone of 250 grams or more without a licence is a criminal offence in Sweden. See a sample question on exactly this.

Insurance

According to Transportstyrelsen, no insurance is required if you only fly drones under 20 kg for leisure, display or recreation. Other flights fall under the EU insurance requirements.

Where-to-fly rules still apply

A light drone may be flown over individual uninvolved people, but never over crowds. Stay below 120 metres, keep the drone in sight, and keep away from airports and restricted areas. See where you can fly.
